Why Spring is a Great Time to Join Seed to Skein

If you’ve been thinking about growing your own dye plants this year, now is a really good time to begin.

The growing season is properly underway - seeds are being sown, seedlings are starting to grow, and the first dye pots of the year are heating up.

Inside Seed to Skein, everything is set up to help you step into that rhythm, even if you’re just starting now.

It’s not too late to Start

One of the most common questions I receive at the moment is: “Have I missed the start?”

The answer is no, not at all! April is still very much the beginning of the growing season. There is plenty of time to sow dye plant seeds and establish a small garden (even in pots), and follow the process through to harvesting and dyeing later in the year.

In many ways, this time of year is the perfect time to join.

What you’ll find inside Seed to skein

Seed to Skein is a growing-led natural dye membership, designed to guide you through the full journey from seed, to plant, to skein.

Each month, five new pieces of content is added to support you in both the garden and the dye pot, with a balance of practical guidance, creative ideas, and deeper understanding.

March: Laying the foundations

In March, we began right at the start of the process.

Inside the membership, you’ll find:

  • A seed sowing demonstration to help you get started with your dye garden

  • An insight into my garden plans for the year, including what I’m growing for colour

  • The first instalment of Yarn Dyeing Tutorials, which covers making hanks, scouring and mordanting

  • Daffodils as the Dye of the Month

  • And a Deep Dive into natural fibres, and how to choose the right yarn for dyeing

April: Growing and dyeing begins

April’s content builds on these foundations - both in the garden and in the dye pot.

This month inside Seed to Skein, we’re exploring:

  • Pricking out and potting up seedlings as they begin to grow

  • A full garden update, sharing how things are developing for me

  • Yarn Dyeing Tutorials in Immersion dyeing, one of the core natural dye techniques

  • A nettle dye recipe for Dye of the Month

  • And a Deep Dive into setting up a simple dye space, exploring what’s good to have now, and what can come later

A growing, active community

Alongside the monthly content, there’s also a private Discord space where members are already sharing their progress.

There’s conversation, questions, photos of seedlings and dye experiments - and a real sense of excitement as everyone begins their dye gardens and dye experiments!

There’s even talk of a future meet-up, which feels very special.

You can still join us

If you’ve been thinking about it, this is a really good moment to join in.

You can:

  • catch up on the March foundations

  • begin sowing and growing now using April’s guides

  • start preparing and dyeing your very first skeins of yarn

  • and move through the rest of the season alongside the firendly community

The membership is £15 per month, on a rolling basis, so you’re free to stay for a single month or the whole growing season.

Seed to Skein is about slowing down, working with the seasons, and following the full journey - from seed, to plant, to skein.

If that’s something you’ve been wanting to explore, I look forward to welcoming you into the community, and growing some colour together.
