Ria Burns designs and makes knitwear for her brand on vintage domestic knitting machines from her studio in Bristol. Working exclusively with undyed British wool due to its sustainability credentials, Ria uses native plant dyes to add pops of colour to her work. Yarns are sourced from British farms and spinners, Ria now uses an exclusive lambswool yarn spun from fleece from Fernhill Farm - located just 15 miles away from her house.
Ria graduated with a first in BA Fashion Design from Batley School of Art, where she chose to specialise in fashion knitwear. After relocating from Leeds to Bristol Ria freelanced as a knitwear designer, before returning to university in 2017 to undertake an MA in Textile Design at Bath Spa University.
Ria’s eponymous brand of botanically dyed, British wool knitwear was researched and developed during her time at Bath Spa.
The brand was launched in September 2018 via a Crowdfunder campaign, where Ria raised funds to be able to move into a larger studio and start a natural dye garden - click here to be added to the mailing list to receive updates on this project.
Ria designs, dyes and makes to order from her studio within Bristol Textile Quarter. Bespoke commissions are welcome, and studio visits can be arranged by appointment. She teaches machine knitting classes in the Bristol area, and is available for lecturing and teaching on machine knitting and sustainable natural dyeing.
